Sacks of grain wasted from inflation in India, men with rifles spectating a Pakistani Polo game, and an African child trudging through the brush in a tattered Harvard sweater. These were the images that greeted attendants of the “Visions of Development” Photo Exhibit put on by Penn’s Society for International Development on Sunday April 8, 2012 in the Bodek Lounge at the University of Pennsylvania.
This annual event brought together a collection of photographs from students who have been in the midst of developing regions throughout the globe for a silent auction for charity. Photographs at the exhibit gave an authentic and discussion-inspiring view of the social, economic, and political dilemmas confronting underdeveloped countries, while also illustrating the beauty and spirit of international cultures. Attendants silently bid on photos all throughout the night, with certain pieces being the center of some heated bidding wars.
Ultimately, the event was a major success with all in attendance enjoying the photographs, the company of others, and free food from Qdoba. In the end 35 pieces were auctioned off, accruing a total revenue of $368.00. All the proceeds from the event were donated to Women’s Campaign International, an organization that advances the opportunities for women to actively participate in public advocacy, market and political processes in developing regions.
